2022 Estate Hogback Mountain
This is our ninth vintage of Hogback Mountain, the first crafted in 2013. We did not make the wine in 2018 due to adverse growing conditions. The wine is a perfect example of a superbly balanced left bank Bordeaux style wine. The experience from nose, palate, through finish beautifully depicts the character of the fruit from the vineyard. This wine is impeccable and an excellent illustration of craftsmanship – the way the fruit has been translated into wine is flawless. From nose to finish, the experience showcases lovely notes of blackberry and plum. There is a smooth sophisticated fruity character on the palate and as the wine finishes, we see a hint of earthiness with beautiful soft tannins. As with all the Hogback Mountains we have crafted, the wine is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, followed by Cabernet Franc with a touch of Petit Verdot. This wine is dynamic and brilliant and will soften as it ages, resulting in increasing earthiness on the finish. This Hogback Mountain pairs well with grilled and roasted meats such as lamb, beef, veal, and game. It is excellent with robust stews. Hard cheeses like Cheshire and red Leicester are also excellent pairings. This wine is exceptional and will gain elegance as it ages over the next 10-12 years.
