2021 Estate Merlot
Merlot is an important varietal at Stone Tower. It plays an important role with our right bank Bordeaux style blend, Windswept Hill. In recent years we have created a single varietal Merlot which has been very popular with our guests. The 2021 vintage brought warmer temperatures throughout the summer but also some rain events during harvest. Wise picking decisions gave way to bold reds with deep color and extraction. This wine is made of Estate grown fruit and is 92% Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Often Merlot is thought to have a jammy and quaffable quality. With this wine we have a lovely nose of baked fruits – plum, blackberry and blueberry. On the palate there is an elegance with a silky rich and full texture. The finish is graced with a touch of baking spices and vanilla which leaves you with a longing for the next sip. This wine pairs well with a large variety of foods. Beef is natural, particularly grilled, roasted or braised. Veal and pork will complement the soft round nature of the wine. For pasta lovers tomato-based sauces with a bit of tarragon and rosemary are lovely. Cheese eaters go for Roquefort, blue, gorgonzola, or cheddar. People often shy away from poultry with red wine but grilled or roasted chicken with this wine is a real crowd pleaser. Drink now through 2028.
